The 2026 Nobel Peace Prize was awarded Friday to South African human rights jurist Navi Pillay, the Norwegian Nobel Committee announced in Oslo.

Pillay has played central roles in international justice, serving on the International Criminal Tribunal for Rwanda and the International Criminal Court, and chairing the U.N. Independent International Commission of Inquiry on the occupied Palestinian territories. The committee said it wished to 'issue a reminder that the ability to resolve conflicts without force or violence is dependent on the international rule of law.'

The award comes as conflicts in Ukraine and the Middle East continue to intensify, with the committee pointedly framing the prize as a defence of rules-based conflict resolution.

Pillay, a former U.N. High Commissioner for Human Rights, has spent decades documenting atrocities and pressing governments and armed groups to answer for them - a career the committee said exemplifies the peaceful settlement of disputes.
