Prime Minister Mark Carney pushed back Thursday against Elon Musk after the SpaceX chief executive publicly called for Quebec, Alberta and Saskatchewan to separate from Canada.

Carney said Canada's future will be decided by Canadians, adding that people should be free to live according to their languages and cultures without interference from 'foreign governments and large tech firms that think they can tell us what to do.'

The exchange lands amid a charged domestic debate over national unity. Quebecers went to the polls in a provincial election just days ago, and separatist voices in Alberta have seized on the result to press their own independence arguments.

Musk, who has repeatedly weighed in on Canadian politics in recent years, has drawn sharp responses from Ottawa before - but Carney's remarks mark one of the most direct rebukes yet from the prime minister's office.
