Susan G. Komen on Friday announced Band As One Los Angeles, a Concert for the Cure - the breast cancer organization's first signature West Coast fundraising concert.
Paula Abdul will headline the event at the Dolby Theatre, joined by musical friends who share Komen's mission. Proceeds from ticket sales will support the organization's work across research, patient care, education and advocacy.
The announcement lands at a moment advocates describe as urgent: nearly 170,000 people in the U.S. are living with incurable, metastatic breast cancer, and incidence is rising fastest among women under 50. Breast cancer remains the most common cancer among Hispanic and Latina women and the leading cause of cancer death in that group.
More than 42,000 women and more than 500 men in the United States are expected to die from the disease this year. Experts estimate up to one-third of breast cancer deaths could be prevented with equitable access to modern treatments.
