The Ghana High Commission in Pretoria has issued a safety advisory for Ghanaian nationals in South Africa, warning of demonstrations in the central business districts of Johannesburg and Durban. The advisory, dated Saturday, October 10, says protesters in Johannesburg are expected to converge on the Constitutional Court.
The mission cited possible road closures, restricted movement, traffic congestion and confrontations between demonstrators and law enforcement. Ghanaians were told to avoid large gatherings and areas of disturbance, limit non-essential travel to affected districts, use alternative routes and report threats to the nearest police station.
The unrest follows a week of anti-immigration protests in Gauteng and KwaZulu-Natal, linked to anger over a withdrawn Home Affairs asylum directive. The demonstrations have put businesses in both city centres on edge as police brace for further confrontations.
Diplomatic missions across Pretoria are monitoring the situation as the protests enter a second week with no clear resolution in sight.
