A young child has died and three other people are in hospital after an early-morning fire in a rowhome in Philadelphia's Fairhill section, fire officials said Sunday.
Crews were called at about 3:30 a.m. to the 3300 block of D Street, where they found smoke coming from the second floor. Firefighters pulled an adult and a child from the home through a window, NBC10 Philadelphia reported, but the child — a three-year-old girl who family members said was days from her fourth birthday — died of her injuries.
A five-year-old boy and a second adult were reported in stable condition, while one adult was listed in critical condition early Sunday. A family member who escaped through a window told the station she lowered her son to people below before getting out herself, and that relatives tried to re-enter through heavy smoke.
Officials have not announced a cause for the fire. The investigation is continuing, and no further update on the hospitalized patients had been released in Sunday's reporting.
