Tommy Lee Jones stepped back into the spotlight this week, making a rare red carpet appearance in Austin, Texas, for the premiere of season 2 of FX's "The Lowdown" at AFS Cinema.

The 80-year-old Oscar winner, who normally shies away from public events, plays the father of Oklahoma "truthstorian" Lee Raybon — portrayed by Ethan Hawke — in the series. His appearance drew warm attention from fans and photographers alike.

The outing comes nine months after the death of his daughter Victoria, who died January 1 at age 34. The San Francisco medical examiner later ruled the cause the toxic effects of cocaine, an accident, PEOPLE reported. Victoria made her film debut in her father's "Men in Black II" in 2002.

Jones has kept a low profile throughout the year of mourning, making the Austin premiere his most visible public moment since the tragedy.
