Tencent is considering raising as much as $5 billion through an offshore bond offering as its artificial intelligence push ramps up, Bloomberg reported Thursday. The transaction could include bonds denominated in U.S. dollars and offshore yuan, with an offering potentially taking place this month.

It would follow Tencent's approximately $4.66 billion bond sale in June — its largest since 2020 — whose proceeds were earmarked for general corporate purposes including AI development. The back-to-back trips to debt markets show how financing the AI race has become a global capital-markets challenge, extending well beyond the American hyperscalers.

Like their U.S. counterparts, Chinese technology companies face massive upfront costs for processors, networking equipment, data centers and engineering talent — compounded by U.S. export restrictions reshaping the semiconductor market and pushing firms toward domestic chips. Tencent has not announced a final decision, and the precise uses of any new financing remain unconfirmed.
