A small, specialised AI model has posted the fastest adoption numbers Vercel has ever recorded. TechCrunch reported on October 16 that Jev, a decision model built by TypeSafe AI, was in use by 35 per cent of paid teams on Vercel's AI gateway within two weeks of launch — nearly double the reach of the second most popular model, Sonnet 5.5.

Jev, released in limited form on September 15, is designed as a lightweight tool for choosing between a small set of predetermined outputs. Limiting the outputs lets it run faster and more cheaply than general-purpose models, which makes it suited to classifying large volumes of data. Vercel itself uses it to replace GPT-6 Luna for classifying harmful commands.

The approach has drawn imitators, with competing offerings reported from OpenAI and Amazon, but Vercel's gateway data is the first hard evidence that the buzz translated into usage. TechCrunch notes the gateway is a limited window on the market, since major labs also sell access through their own APIs.

The same data shows open-source models continuing to gain ground, accounting for more than 70 per cent of tokens processed through Vercel's gateway and nearly a quarter of total spend — a sign that cheaper, narrower models are taking a growing share of real-world AI workloads.
