Eight U.S. states have sued OpenAI over whether ChatGPT is safe for children, according to NBC News morning reporting on October 15.
The lawsuits add state attorneys general to a growing list of regulators, lawmakers and parents asking how AI chatbots handle young users, sensitive conversations and crisis situations — and what safeguards companies should be required to build in.
OpenAI has previously said it is rolling out parental controls, age-appropriate behaviour settings and crisis-resource referrals in its products. The state cases will test how far existing consumer-protection law reaches into chatbot design.
The litigation lands as AI companies face simultaneous pressure over child safety, data use and competition, making the outcome one of the more consequential U.S. court tests for the industry this year.
