Ontario's measles outbreak has claimed another young life. Provincial health officials confirmed that a child has died of the disease, the latest fatal case in an outbreak that has spread across multiple health units this year.

The death lands as hospitals prepare for winter. A coalition of Canadian hospitals and health organizations is warning that emergency departments are already crowded and that respiratory virus season will strain paediatric and acute care capacity further.

Doctors say the pattern is predictable: influenza, RSV and other seasonal viruses surge as temperatures drop, and preventable diseases like measles add avoidable admissions on top. Vaccination, they stress, remains the single most effective protection for children too young or medically unable to be immunized themselves.

Public health units continue to publish exposure notices and urge anyone unsure of their immunization status to check records and catch up on doses, particularly before holiday travel and family gatherings.

For Ontario families, officials' message is twofold: know your child's vaccination status now, and expect longer waits if you need an emergency department this winter.
