One of gaming's great comeback stories is about to fit in your pocket. Hello Games announced Monday that No Man's Sky arrives on iPhone and iPad on October 28, with pre-orders opening the same day as part of Apple's Indie Games Week.

Founder Sean Murray is stressing that this is the full game, not a trimmed mobile edition: every update from a decade of releases is included, compressed into a download of under five gigabytes. The game is free to download and try, with a one-time in-app purchase of $19.99 unlocking the complete experience.

The port runs on iPhone 11 and later, and on iPad Air from the third generation onward. Hello Games says considerable work went into battery life and heat — the two things that kill long play sessions on phones — alongside rebuilt touch controls, controller support, TV casting and mouse-and-keyboard support on iPad.

Some features won't be there on day one: multiplayer, Settlements, cross-save and cross-play are all missing at launch, mirroring how the game first arrived on Nintendo Switch. The studio says multiplayer could follow depending on player numbers and feedback.

The release caps a remarkable arc for a game that launched in 2016 to fierce criticism and was rebuilt, update by update, into one of the most generous live games in the industry.
