Israel is downgrading the United Kingdom's consulate in Jerusalem after Britain imposed sanctions over West Bank settlements, in a sharp diplomatic escalation between the two allies. Twenty British diplomats will leave Israel while seven remain, under an agreement that pauses further retaliation while talks continue.
The move follows London's decision to sanction settlement activity, a step British officials defended as consistent with longstanding policy. Israel views the sanctions as an unacceptable bilateral provocation, prompting the consulate downgrade.
The reduced diplomatic footprint leaves the Jerusalem consulate operating at diminished capacity as both sides negotiate a way forward. Further retaliatory steps are on hold while the talks play out, but the episode marks one of the frostiest chapters in recent U.K.-Israel relations.
