A Toronto Transit Commission streetcar derailed near Wellesley station on Sunday afternoon, knocking out a key stretch of downtown transit and forcing thousands of riders onto shuttle buses. The TTC said Line 1 Yonge-University service was suspended between College and Bloor stations while crews worked at the scene.
The derailment was reported at about 5:19 p.m. Shuttle buses were dispatched to bridge the closed segment, and the TTC warned riders to expect delays and crowded platforms through the evening commute as trains turned back on either side of the closure.
No injuries were reported in the initial updates. The cause of the derailment was not immediately known, and the TTC said service would resume only once the streetcar had been cleared and the track inspected.
The Wellesley closure hit one of the busiest parts of the downtown network, a short but heavily used segment connecting the hospital district, Queen’s Park and the Bloor interchange. Riders were advised to check TTC service alerts before travelling and to allow extra time or use Line 2 and surface routes as alternatives.
