The U.S. cybersecurity job market is shrinking and changing shape at the same time. Postings fell 26.4 per cent through September 2026 to 235,786 — a four-year low — according to CyberSN data reported Monday, with some traditional roles in steep decline.
Penetration tester postings dropped 45.9 per cent and cyber risk analyst roles fell 51.5 per cent, declines analysts link to automation and to employers consolidating security work. Yet the same data shows explosive growth where security meets artificial intelligence: demand for AI security engineers surged 268.3 per cent year over year, and cyber data scientist roles climbed 203.5 per cent.
The split tells a clear story about where the work is going. Routine testing and compliance-heavy analysis are increasingly handled by tooling and smaller senior teams, while organisations scramble for specialists who can secure AI systems, evaluate model risks and defend against AI-powered attacks.
For jobseekers, the report is a map of the transition: generalist security credentials are losing ground, while hybrid skills spanning security engineering, data science and AI command the fastest-growing demand in the field.
