South Africa's President Cyril Ramaphosa has lifted the precautionary suspension of the country's national police commissioner, Fannie Masemola, his office announced on Friday, clearing the way for the police chief to resume his duties on Monday.

Masemola had been placed on precautionary suspension about six months ago. Reports on Friday said he had been cleared of the charges that prompted the suspension, and the presidency confirmed the decision to reinstate him.

The return of the national commissioner closes a long period of uncertainty at the top of the South African Police Service, which has faced intense public scrutiny over violent crime, internal disputes and the politically sensitive investigations that regularly land on the commissioner's desk.

Masemola is expected back at work on Monday. No further detail on the terms of the clearance was provided in Friday's announcement.
