Ethiopia's Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed on Friday announced an interim government in the northern Tigray region, according to reports from the region.

The announcement follows an outbreak of fighting in recent weeks involving a rebel alliance and the Ethiopian National Defense Force, raising fears of a return to the large-scale conflict that devastated Tigray earlier this decade before a peace agreement was signed.

Interim administrations have been used in Tigray since that agreement to manage security, services and the region's relationship with the federal government in Addis Ababa while elections and longer-term political arrangements remain unresolved.

Details of the new interim government's composition and mandate were still emerging on Friday, and there was no immediate word on whether the announcement would calm the latest fighting.
