Tonight's home opener in Edmonton comes with a milestone attached. Oilers captain Connor McDavid is set to play his 1,000th regular-season NHL game when Winnipeg visits Rogers Place.

McDavid, 29, reaches the mark having won the Hart Trophy three times, and he enters the night still chasing the one prize missing from his resume: a Stanley Cup, after back-to-back finals losses in recent seasons.

Edmonton arrives at 1-1-0 after splitting its opening road trip, losing in Seattle and winning in Vancouver. Winnipeg is also 1-1-0, making tonight an early measuring stick between two Western Conference contenders.

The Oilers plan to honour McDavid's milestone during the evening, and the home crowd gets its first look at this season's group on home ice. Puck drop is tonight at Rogers Place.
