Sean Giancola is stepping down as publisher and CEO of the New York Post Media Group, the company announced Tuesday in a Business Wire press release. Giancola, who has been with the group for more than 10 years — seven as its chief — will stay on through early next year to manage the transition while a search for his successor gets underway.
The company credited Giancola with the tabloid's commercial turnaround: he returned the group to profitability after years of losses and led its digital-first transition, expanding its reach far beyond the print edition. On his watch the company launched The California Post, its West Coast expansion, and Page Six Hollywood.
News Corp CEO Robert Thomson said Giancola's leadership "helped the Post turn profitable for the first time in decades," while News Corp chair Lachlan Murdoch praised his "vision and commercial capabilities."
Giancola's departure marks the end of an era for America's oldest continuously published daily newspaper, which under his leadership became a national digital powerhouse while keeping its pugnacious tabloid identity intact.
