An ICE agent shot and wounded a Dominican man in his car Thursday afternoon while the man's 5-year-old boy sat in the back seat, authorities said. The shooting happened shortly after 4 p.m. in the Marble Hill neighborhood of the Bronx, sparking protests near the scene and outside the hospital where the man was treated Thursday evening, where some demonstrators clashed with police.
Police Commissioner Jessica Tisch said at least one ICE agent opened fire during the encounter, with seven rounds fired. The man suffered a neck wound below his left ear and was hospitalized in stable condition. The child was physically unharmed and was placed with a family member. The NYPD said it was not involved in the federal operation and was not on scene when the shooting occurred.
Mayor Zohran Mamdani condemned the shooting, questioning how the driver could have identified masked agents wearing construction-style vests as law enforcement, and demanded that ICE leave New York City. 'This is an unconscionable and incredibly serious situation,' Mamdani said Thursday. 'Get ICE out of our neighborhoods. Get ICE out of our hospitals. Abolish ICE.'
The Department of Homeland Security said agents were conducting a targeted enforcement operation against a Dominican national it described as being in the country illegally with a grand larceny conviction, and said the shooting's cause remained under investigation. Late Thursday, Mamdani said he had spent two hours speaking with President Trump and Homeland Security Secretary Markwayne Mullin in an unsuccessful effort to secure the wounded man's release, and that federal agents had removed the man from the hospital in an unmarked vehicle.
