The remnants of Tropical Storm Rachel are expected to bring rain and thunderstorms to Southern California on Sunday into Monday night, according to the National Weather Service. The system could end a long dry stretch for the Southland while creating hazards along the coast.
A coastal flood advisory is in effect through 2 p.m. Tuesday for coastal Los Angeles and Orange counties. Surf is expected to run 3 to 5 feet Friday, building to 6 to 9 feet Sunday, with forecasters warning of life-threatening surf and rip currents.
Morning high tides near 7 feet could cause coastal flooding and beach erosion, particularly in low-lying beach areas. Residents and visitors are urged to stay out of the water in affected zones and never turn their backs on the ocean.
Forecasters will refine the rain totals as the system approaches, but the weekend setup marks one of the more significant early-season tropical moisture events for the region.
