Two people have died after a small plane crashed into a field outside Fergus, Ontario, on Friday morning, Ontario Provincial Police confirmed in an update released Saturday and reported again on Sunday.
Emergency crews were called at about 10:15 a.m. to the area of Beatty Line and Wellington Road 17, north of Guelph. Police said the aircraft caught fire after it came down, firefighters put out the flames, and both occupants were pronounced dead at the scene. No other injuries were reported.
The Transportation Safety Board said the aircraft was an amateur-built Skybolt biplane that left the Fergus airport at about 10 a.m. for a local aerobatic training flight with two experienced pilots aboard. It came down in a cornfield roughly two kilometres northwest of the airfield and ended up upside down.
Police cleared the scene around noon on Saturday. The safety board says it will gather and assess information in the coming weeks to establish what caused the crash, and officials have not yet released the identities of the two people who died.
