British Columbia marked ShakeOut week on October 15 with its annual earthquake drill, built around the familiar routine of dropping, covering and holding on.

Organizers said about 850,000 people in the province had signed up to take part, joining millions worldwide in the October 15 drill. The Vancouver region, sitting in one of Canada's most seismically active zones, is a central focus of the campaign.

The BC Earthquake Alliance, founded in 2010, runs the effort to build a culture of earthquake and tsunami preparedness across the province, working with residents, businesses and governments.

The Insurance Bureau of Canada said it supports the drill as a reminder for households to review emergency kits, meeting points and what to do in the first minutes after a major quake.
