Ghana's Minister for Foreign Affairs, Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, has firmly denied allegations of misappropriation in the evacuation of Ghanaians from South Africa, insisting that 'not a cedi, not a pesewa is missing.'

The operation, which ran from May 27 to September 4, 2026, brought home 1,964 Ghanaians amid renewed xenophobic violence targeting foreign nationals in South Africa, and cost GH¢49,721,786, according to the ministry.

Speaking on JoyNews' Newsfile on Saturday, October 17, Ablakwa faced scrutiny from the minority in Parliament, which alleges that more than GH¢16.4 million of the total requires further explanation and has demanded an independent audit, raising questions over reintegration grants, transport allowances and flight records.

The ministry says it submitted a detailed report of more than 200 pages on September 18 in response to a Right to Information request from the Foreign Affairs Committee's deputy ranking member, including evacuees' contact details and signatures that it says support the legitimacy of the spending.
