South Africa will launch Disability Rights Awareness Month on Friday, the government news agency reported on October 15, with an awareness walk in Pretoria.

The walk, from Church Square to the Union Buildings, will bring together government representatives, organisations of people with disabilities, advocates and other stakeholders. The campaign is an annual push for the rights, dignity and inclusion of people with disabilities.

A department spokesperson said the launch is meant to reaffirm that people with disabilities are equal rights holders, and to highlight the responsibility of government, business and communities to remove barriers to full participation.

The campaign rests on South Africa's constitutional commitment to equality, its White Paper on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities, and the UN convention on disability rights.
