Two people were killed and 11 others were hospitalized Saturday after a woman drove a pickup truck onto a field during a youth soccer game at the Stryker Sports Complex in Wichita, Kansas. Wichita police Captain Aaron Moses said a six-year-old boy and a 35-year-old man were killed, and the injured ranged in age from five to 68.
Police said the driver, a 34-year-old woman from Garden City, was taken into custody. Two children were in the truck with her. Officers have not said whether they believe the act was intentional, and Moses told reporters investigators are still working to determine how and why it happened.
Wichita Police Chief Joe Sullivan said bystanders sprang into action to provide lifesaving help before first responders arrived, calling their response truly amazing and indicative of the Wichita community. Mayor Lily Wu urged people to avoid the area during the investigation and called the news heartbreaking.
All events at the sports complex were cancelled as the investigation continued. Police said there was no further threat to the public.
