NEW YORK — Investigators are searching for a shooter after a driver was killed on an approach to the George Washington Bridge on Tuesday evening. Port Authority officers responding just after 7 p.m. to a reported one-vehicle crash on the westbound upper level found the driver wounded, and he later died at Englewood Medical Center, according to police sources cited by NBC New York and ABC7.

The victim was identified in reporting as a 46-year-old Rockland County resident and an off-duty Con Edison worker. He was driving a Volkswagen Golf toward New Jersey when, investigators say, his car nearly collided with another vehicle on a ramp leading to the bridge's westbound upper level.

Law enforcement sources said a single shot was then fired from the other vehicle, striking through the rear passenger window and the driver's headrest before hitting the driver. His car later struck a median. The other vehicle fled, and police are reviewing surveillance video while continuing the search for the person responsible.

The upper level of the bridge to New Jersey was closed during the investigation and reopened overnight. Police have not released a description of the suspected shooter or the other vehicle, and the victim's identity was being withheld pending family notification. The investigation remains ongoing.
