At least 600,000 people across Ukraine were left without electricity after deadly overnight Russian missile and drone strikes, President Volodymyr Zelensky said on Wednesday, as critical energy infrastructure was hit in Kyiv, the capital region and the north-eastern city of Kharkiv.
Ukraine's state emergency service said at least three people were killed and 21 injured in Kyiv. Zelensky said Russia used 39 ballistic missiles and more than 120 attack drones and loitering munitions against energy and critical infrastructure, and said one ballistic strike specifically targeted infrastructure he said was covered by a ceasefire announced by U.S. President Donald Trump.
Trump claimed on Sunday that an energy ceasefire was in place between Russia and Ukraine, but the Kremlin has not confirmed signing off on a truce, saying only that contacts on the matter continue. Ukraine says it has halted its months-long campaign against Russian oil refineries, with its last reported hit on a refinery last Friday.
Ukrainian officials also said access to the Starlink communications system was restricted overnight, disrupting battlefield missions, while Kyiv says its forces have retaken ground in an operation in eastern Ukraine that began in the summer. Those battlefield claims could not be independently verified.
