Wednesday's session will be decided by one number. U.S. stock futures were little changed overnight, with Dow futures down about 32 points, after a second straight losing session on Tuesday. September consumer price data is due Wednesday, with a Dow Jones survey pointing to inflation of 3.6 per cent year on year, up from 3.4 per cent.

The Treasury fined the bank 1.21 billion dollars for widespread anti-money-laundering and sanctions failures, saying it failed to report more than 5 billion dollars in suspicious activity. The bank said its third-quarter results, due Wednesday, will include a non-deductible charge of about 1.2 billion dollars, and its shares fell in extended trading.
