Matchday 3 of the UEFA Champions League league phase delivered the result of the season so far on Wednesday night: Como, playing in the competition for the first time, thrashed Manchester United 4-1 at the Stadio Giuseppe Sinigaglia, with Nico Paz curling the hosts in front inside two minutes, setting up the second and scoring the third himself before Jacobo Ramón headed a fourth.
Real Madrid were ruthless at the Bernabéu, beating RB Leipzig 4-1 for a third straight win — Kylian Mbappé's goal was his 73rd in the competition, moving him within 17 of fourth-placed Karim Benzema on the all-time list, and Yan Diomande, who set Mbappé up, added the fourth. In Munich, Arsenal led through Eberechi Eze, fell behind to an Alphonso Davies equaliser and a Harry Kane penalty, then rescued a 2-2 draw through Declan Rice eight minutes from time, ending their 14-match league-phase winning run but keeping them on seven points.
Elsewhere on Wednesday: Aston Villa maintained their perfect start by beating Viking 3-1, Club Brugge swept Lens aside 3-0, Inter claimed a first win of the campaign 1-0 over Shakhtar Donetsk despite finishing with ten men, Real Betis edged Feyenoord 1-0 on an Isco penalty, Galatasaray won a thriller 4-2 at Lille, and LASK produced the night's other shock with a 3-2 comeback win at Sporting CP.
Nine matches produced 34 goals — an average of 3.78 per game. Real Madrid, Aston Villa and Real Betis joined Paris Saint-Germain and Liverpool on nine points at the top of the early league-phase picture.
Matchday 4 follows on November 3–4, when Manchester United travel to Roma, Arsenal visit Slavia Praha, Real Madrid go to AEK Athens and Como head to Lens — a fixture list that suddenly looks far less routine than it did a week ago. In tennis, meanwhile, Alexander Zverev remains on course to reach world No. 1 for the first time by November 2 after Jannik Sinner ended his season through injury, though the exhausted German has flagged he may need a break before the Vienna, Paris and Turin swing.
