South African President Cyril Ramaphosa has brought Professor Wiseman L. Nkuhlu into government, naming the respected academic and governance figure to a revamped ministerial advisory team, TimesLIVE and SowetanLIVE reported on Tuesday.
Nkuhlu is the chancellor of the University of Pretoria and a veteran of South Africa's economic institutions: he previously served as chief executive of the NEPAD secretariat and as an economic adviser to former president Thabo Mbeki. He is also widely known for speaking out against state capture, the corruption scandal that hollowed out state institutions under the previous administration.
The advisory structure he joins works with the presidency and ministers on policy and on ethics and integrity questions across government — a brief that has grown heavier as Ramaphosa's administration tries to rebuild credibility in institutions damaged by the capture era and to steady a coalition government.
The appointment was the lead story on TimesLIVE on Tuesday afternoon, and it lands as the presidency reshapes the team around the president. For Ramaphosa, recruiting a figure with Nkuhlu's anti-corruption reputation is a signal about the standards the advisory team is meant to enforce.
