KwaZulu-Natal police have dismissed threats from anti-migrant protesters to disrupt Saturday's sold-out MTN8 final between Orlando Pirates and Mamelodi Sundowns at Moses Mabhida Stadium in Durban, vowing heavy security and promising arrests for anyone who interferes with the match.
Activists from the March and March Movement threatened to block stadium gates, arguing that a marquee football event should not go ahead while protests against undocumented immigration continue. The threats follow days of unrest in Durban's city centre, including looting and torched vehicles, triggered partly by anger over a court ruling requiring immigration offices to process asylum applications.
Police said the 18:00 SAST kickoff would proceed as scheduled and warned that officers would take decisive action against disruption. The final is one of the biggest fixtures in South African domestic football.
The standoff highlights the growing tension between the anti-migrant movement and authorities in South Africa, with the stadium showdown playing out in front of a sold-out crowd and a national television audience.
