Just over half of the major-party candidates in the most competitive U.S. Senate races told Reuters they will accept the election results regardless of the outcome, the news agency reported on October 15.
Reuters surveyed campaigns in 13 states that could decide control of the Senate in the final years of Donald Trump's presidency. Of 26 campaigns, nine Democrats, one independent and four Republicans said their candidates would accept results without conditions.
The survey also asked about possible federal intervention in state-run elections. Republicans currently hold a 53-47 Senate majority, while independent analysts cited by Reuters favour Democrats to win the House.
The mixed answers, less than a month before the November 3 midterms, underline the uncertainty hanging over the vote and over how losing candidates will respond.
