OpenAI is expanding its advertising business into the most visual corner of ChatGPT. The company is adding display ads that appear alongside images users ask the chatbot to generate, showing up right after the image results.
The rollout begins later this month in October 2026, U.S.-only for now, with a set of initial test advertisers. OpenAI says the ads will be clearly labeled, will not influence the answers ChatGPT gives, and will not appear in emotionally vulnerable or sensitive conversations.
The company is also bulking up its ad measurement stack: attribution partners now include AppsFlyer, Triple Whale, Adjust, Branch, Singular, Kochava, Airbridge, Tenjin, Fospha, Measured and INCRMNTAL, with geo-experiment support from Haus, Measured and WorkMagic, and brand-suitability controls via DoubleVerify and IAS.
The move is the latest step in a monetization push that began earlier this year, when OpenAI introduced ads to free and low-cost tiers and expanded them to India in August. With ChatGPT drawing about 1.2 billion weekly users, the ad inventory is enormous — and, as TechCrunch notes, arrives just as Meta's free agentic Muse app competes for the same casual users. Some friction may be the point: ad fatigue has a way of nudging users toward paid tiers.
