Nick Reiner, the 33-year-old charged with murdering his parents in one of Los Angeles's most shocking recent homicide cases, is due back in court later this month, and prosecutors say they expect the proceeding to finally move the case forward.
Reiner is charged with two counts of first-degree murder in the December 2025 stabbing deaths of his father, director Rob Reiner, 78, and his mother, Michele Singer Reiner, 70. The couple were found dead in their Brentwood home on Dec. 14, 2025, and their son was arrested the same day.
Deputy District Attorney Habib Balian told reporters the prosecution expects Reiner's lawyer to enter a not-guilty plea on his behalf at the upcoming hearing, which would set the stage for future court dates. The plea has been delayed repeatedly — first after Reiner's original public defender withdrew from the case, and later by questions around his mental-health status.
Reiner has been represented since February by public defender Kimberly Greene. He is being held without bail at a downtown Los Angeles jail and has appeared in court in a suicide-prevention vest.
If convicted as charged, Reiner faces life in prison without parole or a possible death sentence. The case has drawn added attention because of the family's public openness about his long-documented struggles with addiction — a history Rob and Michele Reiner turned into the 2015 film Being Charlie, which Nick co-wrote.
