A shallow magnitude 6.9 earthquake struck the central Mid-Atlantic Ridge at 12:23 UTC on Tuesday, at a depth of about 10 kilometres, according to monitoring reports citing USGS data.

The epicentre sits along the tectonically active central segment of the ridge, far from major landmasses or populated areas. The USGS issued a green alert, indicating a low likelihood of casualties or damage, and no felt reports were received.

It was the second strong ridge event of the day: a shallow M6.7 earthquake was recorded in the same region at 05:44 UTC, also with no tsunami threat assessed from its mid-ocean location.

Separately on Tuesday morning, a shallow M5.1 earthquake hit in the Indian Ocean about 171 kilometres southwest of Denpasar, Bali, at a depth of 10 kilometres. Earthquake monitoring listed its tsunami risk as low. No damage from either the Bali or ridge events had been established in the initial reports.
