Drivers crawling through downtown Miami traffic this week were passing a construction first. Crews on the I-395/SR 836/I-95 design-build project have set the first segmental box on the corridor's future Signature Bridge — an installation the project team describes as the first of its kind in Florida.

The milestone, flagged in project alerts and captured in aerial footage, marks visible progress on the sweeping arches that will define the new bridge over the Miami River area and Biscayne Boulevard.

The broader rebuild, budgeted at about $840 million, is remaking one of South Florida's most congested interchanges, with new ramps, a double-decker section and a community park space planned beneath the elevated roadway.

Officials continue to warn of lane closures and detours as work intensifies. When finished — the project is slated for late 2027 — the Signature Bridge is meant to be both a traffic fix and a new postcard image for Miami.
