Federal Defence Minister David McGuinty delivered a deliberately pro-Canada message in Alberta on Wednesday, using a visit to Canadian Forces Base Edmonton to highlight $8 billion in ongoing military projects in the province.

McGuinty toured the base alongside Alberta Premier Danielle Smith, framing Confederation as what he called a bargain of reciprocity — a partnership in which every region contributes and benefits. The appearance put a federal cabinet minister shoulder-to-shoulder with the premier at one of the country's largest military installations.

The timing is hard to miss. Alberta voters head to the polls October 19 for a referendum vote on ten questions, including whether the province should hold a binding referendum on separation. Smith said she hopes the visit and the investment it spotlights will build confidence in the federation.

The $8 billion figure covers military projects already underway across Alberta, a reminder of the scale of federal defence spending flowing into the province even as the sovereignty debate sharpens. Whether the message lands with voters will become clear when referendum ballots are counted later this month.
