California filed suit against U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement on Thursday, seeking to stop immigration arrests at courthouses.
Attorney General Rob Bonta's office argues that enforcement actions at courthouses have stopped witnesses and victims of crime from coming to court, undermining prosecutions and public safety.
The filing, reported from Los Angeles by Courthouse News, is the latest in a series of legal clashes between California and the federal government over immigration enforcement, including a separate Justice Department suit this week over the tabulation of certain midterm ballots.
ICE has previously defended courthouse operations as a lawful part of immigration enforcement. The court will now decide whether the state can restrict where those arrests take place.
