Huawei and Qualcomm have signed a broad multiyear patent agreement covering 5G, computing, artificial intelligence and networking technologies, the companies announced.

Under the deal, China's Huawei will license and assign patents in compute, AI and networking to the U.S. chip designer. It is Huawei's first-ever patent-licensing agreement with Qualcomm covering 5G, and the first in which it licenses or assigns computing, AI and networking patents to the American company.

Qualcomm will also purchase some of Huawei's U.S. patents in compute, AI and networking as part of the arrangement. Financial terms were not disclosed, and the deal remains subject to regulatory approvals.

The agreement follows a recent Wi-Fi cross-licensing deal between Huawei and HP, and comes despite years of U.S. sanctions that have limited Huawei's access to advanced semiconductors. Huawei says its expected contract value from patent licensing now exceeds $6.9 billion.
