Mourners gathered on Sunday in Erie, Pennsylvania, outside the home where a shooting on Friday left eight people dead, in a fresh development in a case that has shaken the lakeside city.

Julius Windham, whose one-year-old daughter Amarianna was among those killed, said Sunday that the gunman was a grandfather and patriarch within the family — a man who, in daily life, had appeared smiling and ordinary. Windham said the victims included his daughter, her pregnant mother, the woman's five-year-old son and an unborn baby.

Erie Police Chief Rick Lorah said the 45-year-old gunman, who took his own life, was related to seven of the eight victims; the eighth was a friend of the pregnant woman. Police have not publicly released the names of the gunman or the victims, and no motive has been stated.

Investigators recovered video and audio from inside the home that captured muffled shots before two women arrived, pounded on the door and were shot as they approached. Lorah said detectives would continue interviewing relatives and examining phones as they work to establish what happened inside the house shortly before 5 p.m. on Friday.
