Duane 'Keefe D' Davis has been sentenced to 40 years to life in the murder of Tupac Shakur, according to ABC News coverage of Tuesday's court proceedings.

Shakur was shot in Las Vegas in 1996 and died days later at age 25. His killing became one of the most investigated and mythologised crimes in music history, spawning decades of books, documentaries and theories before Davis was charged.

Davis's case drew unusual attention because of his own past interviews and memoir, in which he discussed the night of the shooting. Prosecutors built their case around those statements and the accounts of witnesses to the drive-by attack.

The sentence was handed down the same day a federal court in Buffalo began jury selection in another high-profile case, but in entertainment history the Davis sentencing is the headline: a formal end, nearly three decades on, to the question of who would be held criminally responsible for Shakur's death.
