Joni Mitchell, one of Canada's most celebrated singer-songwriters, has become a citizen of the United States, CBC reported on Wednesday.
The move closes a journey that began 62 years ago, when Mitchell left Canada in the mid-1960s and built her career in the American folk and rock scenes, writing songs that would define a generation on both sides of the border.
Born in Fort Macleod, Alberta, and raised in Saskatchewan, Mitchell went on to release landmark albums including Blue and Court and Spark, and remains a towering figure in popular music whose work is studied, covered and celebrated worldwide.
Her citizenship milestone lands as renewed interest in her catalogue continues, with younger artists regularly citing her songwriting as a formative influence — and Canadians claiming her, as ever, as one of their own.
