Chris Alexander has ended his campaign for mayor of Toronto, announcing Tuesday that he is dropping out of the race less than three weeks before voting day. The former Conservative MP said he saw no “path to success” after polls showed him at roughly seven per cent support.
The race has remained remarkably static in recent weeks, with Mayor Olivia Chow polling around 38 per cent and challenger Brad Bradford near 32 per cent, according to race analysis published this week. Advance voting is already underway — polls opened Tuesday morning at two locations in each of Toronto's 25 wards — meaning a significant share of ballots could be cast before any late-campaign shift.
In his farewell remarks, Alexander warned that Toronto could repeat its problems in four years without stronger fiscal plans from whoever wins. His departure further narrows a mayoral field that had already been thinning as the October 26 election day approaches.
