Canada is putting new money behind its space sector. Ottawa announced $11.1 million for 16 projects led by 15 Canadian organizations, describing space as a strategic national asset.

The funded work spans satellite imaging for emergency response and infrastructure monitoring, better tracking of Arctic sea ice and maritime activity, and more secure communications. Several projects also use artificial intelligence to make satellites more autonomous and efficient.

Other work focuses on communications and power systems that could support future lunar missions, as Canadian firms position themselves for a growing lunar economy.

Industry Minister Melanie Joly announced the funding in Longueuil, Quebec. The government says the investments are meant to keep Canadian companies competitive while supporting sovereignty, security and economic growth.
