MISSISSAUGA — The largest city in Canada without a subway wants in. Mississauga mayoral candidate Bonnie Crombie has unveiled a Subway Action Plan to connect Mississauga directly to Toronto's subway network by extending Line 2 Bloor-Danforth west from its Kipling terminus.
The proposed extension would serve Sherway Gardens and continue into the heart of Mississauga City Centre, letting residents board in Mississauga and ride straight into Toronto's network. The plan sets out first-100-days steps: meetings with government partners, a motion to Mississauga City Council and the launch of a joint business case.
Mississauga is Canada's seventh most populous municipality, with 717,961 residents at the 2021 census, and has no subway service today. Toronto's subway already reaches beyond the city boundary — Line 1 has served Vaughan Metropolitan Centre in York Region since December 2017 — and Ontario is building a three-station extension of Line 2 east into Scarborough.
'Residents deserve more time with their families and better access to jobs and opportunities. Bringing the subway to Mississauga would help build that future,' Crombie said. She framed the plan as part of a broader pitch to make life more affordable, keep neighbourhoods safe and build the transportation network the city needs.
