One person is in hospital with critical injuries after a fire tore through part of a high-rise apartment building in Brampton on Monday afternoon, in a Toronto-area emergency that drew a large response from Peel firefighters and paramedics.

Emergency services were called shortly after 3 p.m. to the area of Queen Street and Beech Street, where crews found an active fire inside the building. The building was evacuated as firefighters worked to bring the blaze under control.

The fire has since been extinguished and residents have been allowed to return to their homes. Roads in the area, which were closed during the response, have reopened.

Peel Regional Police have taken over the scene and are investigating the cause of the fire, which remains unknown. Fire crews have left the building, and police say the investigation is ongoing.
