SpaceX is known for rockets, but its fastest-moving story may now be software. The company's AI business is beating expectations, TechCrunch reports, in the latest sign that artificial intelligence has become a central growth engine for Elon Musk's space empire rather than a side project.

The development matters because SpaceX's valuation story has traditionally rested on launch cadence and its Starlink satellite network. An AI operation outperforming internal expectations adds a third leg — one with software margins and enterprise customers rather than hardware cycles.

It also tightens the overlap between Musk's companies. His AI venture xAI and SpaceX have drawn closer operationally, and a stronger-than-expected AI performance inside SpaceX raises fresh questions about how the pieces of the Musk portfolio share talent, compute and data.

Details on the AI unit's revenue and customer mix remain closely held, as they are across SpaceX's private financials. But the direction is clear enough for the market to notice: the world's most valuable private space company is increasingly being priced, in part, as an AI company too.
