Two of artificial intelligence's fiercest rivals are becoming distribution partners. OpenAI will make its frontier AI models and Codex coding agent available through Google Cloud in the coming weeks, the companies said on Wednesday, in a deal reported by Reuters that underscores how major cloud providers are becoming key distributors of top AI models.

The partnership will bring OpenAI's latest models, such as GPT-6 Astra, to Google Cloud's Model Garden. Customers will be able to buy them through Google Cloud Marketplace and apply existing cloud spending commitments to the purchases, according to a company blog post, as OpenAI pushes to sell its models to more enterprise customers.

The arrangement also gives customers in regulated industries access to OpenAI models through Google Cloud's access controls, data governance tools and infrastructure for building agentic AI workflows — a practical consideration for banks, hospitals and governments that cannot route data through just any platform.

Alphabet's Google is the latest major hyperscaler to offer OpenAI models, after OpenAI's exclusive distribution arrangement with Microsoft expired in April and it expanded distribution to Amazon Web Services. The deal adds another layer to a complex relationship: OpenAI and Google compete directly in core AI products and search, even as the economics of building and deploying large models push them toward cooperation, and it strengthens Google Cloud's strategy of offering a wider range of third-party models rather than relying only on its own.
