Spartanburg Regional Healthcare System has opened an 11-bed Adolescent Behavioral Health Unit at Spartanburg Medical Center's Mary Black campus, expanding inpatient mental health care for young people in South Carolina's Upstate. The system announced the expansion on October 1, and the news was published Monday, October 5, 2026.

The unit serves adolescents experiencing behavioral health crises serious enough to require hospitalization. A multidisciplinary team — including psychiatrists trained to treat children and adolescents — will stabilize patients and connect them with outpatient treatment and community support after discharge. The program covers Spartanburg, Cherokee and Union counties.

The new beds fill a gap that forced families into long drives: previously, many adolescents who needed inpatient psychiatric treatment had to be transferred outside the immediate service area. Keeping those teens local means parents can stay involved in care during what is often the worst week of a family's life.

The opening is tied to Vital Spartanburg, a community mental health initiative launched in June that brings together nonprofits, philanthropists, municipalities and healthcare organizations around a shared action plan for behavioral health. Spartanburg Regional is a founding healthcare partner of the effort, which drew input from more than 75 community leaders and accepts donations for mental health, addiction and behavioral health programs across the county.
