Israel marked three years since the October 7, 2023 Hamas-led attacks on Wednesday, with ceremonies across the country honoring the roughly 1,200 people killed and the 251 taken hostage in the deadliest day in the nation's history, the BBC reports.
The commemorations included memorials at the Nova music festival site, where hundreds of young people were murdered, and in the kibbutzim along the Gaza border that bore the brunt of the assault. Families of hostages — living and dead — gathered to demand answers and accountability as the war they triggered grinds on.
In Gaza, the Hamas-run health ministry says more than 74,200 people have been killed in subsequent Israeli attacks, a toll that has drawn condemnation from much of the international community and fueled protests worldwide, including in Canada.
Three years on, the region remains on edge: ceasefire efforts have repeatedly collapsed, the humanitarian situation in Gaza is catastrophic, and the war's political aftershocks continue to reshape the Middle East and beyond.
